Waterloo Street

A more pedestrian-friendly precinct

Urban design concept proposal developed as the architect-in-charge of Singapore’s Museum planning area, in collaboration with team members from the city’s urban planning and utilities departments, and in consultation with stakeholders through public engagement sessions and exhibitions.

Various street enhancement works over the years, such as wider sidewalks and new public benches designed by students from nearby arts schools, have created a vibrant and walkable environment at Queen and Bencoolen Streets, to form staging grounds for popular events like the Singapore Night Festival. Waterloo Street is sandwiched between these two, and has the potential to form a pedestrian-friendly arts belt together with its parallel streets.

Waterloo Street today has narrow footpaths at localised stretches and a lack of shade. Opportunities to enhance the pedestrian experience were identified and developed with stakeholders such as the arts groups and residents in the area.

Taking in ideas from public engagement sessions, Waterloo Street will become even more pedestrian-friendly in future, with more spaces for people and events, increased shade and greenery, and better connectivity to nearby public transport nodes.
