Object 12³

Pneumatic Pliable Pop-Up

Invention and fabrication of a modular inflatable object with possibilities for nomadic habitation.

Creating spaces with fabric presents unique structural challenges that also opens up new design possibilities. Intuitively, the collapsible nature of fabric and the structural needs of a habitable pop-up object seem vastly contradictory, and in attempting to reconcile these polarities, we arrive at the question: how can we create flexible structures?

OBJECT 12³ is a pneumatic pop-up object that operates as a pliable transformer. The object is comprised of a distinct, simple and modulated triangular 2D graphic that extrudes inwards to create structural support, but also extrudes outwards to allow for performative interactions. With a constant air pressure system, the volume of air is adjustable according to the total volume of the object. This pop-up can be experienced in various states, and by unzipping the larger zipper while it is fully inflated, you can either let someone in, for a uniquely meditative experience, or you can fully unzip it to create a pneumatic shell.

By integrating fabric construction into the creation of pop-up structures, we introduce compactability and flexibility, making it possible to create a new type of transient, lightweight, and nomadic architectural space.
